And God Spoke All These Words

The Ten Commandments for The Third Mellinium

The premise of this book is its title, And God Spoke All These Words. That is the way the Ten Commandments are

By Robert P. Mills

introduced in Exodus 20:1, where God spoke these “ten words” to his people, whom he had liberated from their bondage and set apart for his service.

Christians need not fear thoroughly examining and exploring all facets of the Ten Commandments – historical, linguistic and theological. Indeed, God richly rewards those who take such delight in meditating on the words he has spoken (Psalm 1). But such investigation must begin from a posture of faith seeking understanding. We must stand under the authority of these commandments to teach, rebuke, correct and train us in righteousness (II Tim. 3:16), not over them as their master and judge.

These studies begin with an introduction that considers the place of the Ten Commandments in the Church and the world. Two chapters then discuss God’s gracious gift of the law to his covenant people. Each of the remaining 10 chapters explores a single commandment. At the end of every chapter are questions for group discussion or personal reflection and a suggested prayer drawn from Scripture.

My prayer is that those who undertake this study will be moved to a deeper knowledge and love of the Triune God.
